Eedenistä itään

Olihan hyvä elokuva, Steinbeckin novellista tehty Eedenistä itään (1955) 
Cal ja Aron, veljekset. Jälkimmäinen näistä "kunnollinen" ja Calia kukaan ei oikein ymmärtänyt. Halusi hyvää, mutta aina veljensä teki kaiken paremmin ja sai kiitosta. Kerran kun isällään meni hermot,  käytiin allaoleva keskustelu.

Cal:  "You're right. I am bad. I knew that for a long time."  

Mr. Trask: "I didn't mean that, Cal. I spoke in anger."

Cal: "Well, it's true. Aron's the good one. I guess there's just a certain amount of good and bad you get from your parents and I just got the bad."

 Mr. Trask: "That's not true. Cal, listen to me. You can make of yourself anything you want. It's up to you. A man has a choice. That's where he's different from an animal."

Cal yritti, mutta. 
Erinäisten vaiheiden jälkeen Calin puolesta puhuttiin isälle näin

"Mr. Trask, it's awful not to be loved. It's the worst thing in the world. Don't ask me - even if you could - how I know that. I just know it. It makes you mean, and violent, and cruel. And that's the way Cal has always felt, Mr. Trask. All his life! Maybe you didn't mean it that way - but it's true. You never gave him your love. You never asked for his. You never asked him for one thing. But you must give him some sign, Mr. Trask, some sign that you love him... or he'll never be a man. All his life he'll feel guilty and alone unless you release him. " 

 Rakkaudettomuus oli luonut Calille semmosen merkityksettömyyden tunteen, minkä takia hän oli ensin yrittäny hankkia rakkautta keinolla millä hyvänsä, mutta lopulta heitti hanskat tiskiin. 

Cal: "I've been jealous all my life. Jealous, I couldn't even stand it. Tonight, I even tried to buy your love, but now I don't want it anymore... I can't use it anymore. I don't want any kind of love anymore. It doesn't pay off." 

Ja tuon jälkeen ei enää millään eikä kenelläkään ollut mitään väliä. Onneksi ainakin Calin kohdalla asia taisi loppupeleissä kääntyä ihan hyväksi. 

No, voitte kuvitella miten löysin tästä kaikkee tärkeää.

Mutta  ei niitä nyt tähän.

Muutakun jo kouluaikoina tallettamani ajatus, 

jonka merkityksellisyyttä en silloin vielä osannut aavistaakaan...

No okei, Cal oli James Dean. Mä niin ymmärrän sen ajan naisia...
Mut oli se leffa muutenkin hyvä, niiku sanoin ;)
